The Weinhaus - Brasserie and Bar

- What some of the reviews had to say about Vinothek -

I’ve never started a review before by talking about the menus but at Vinothek, a wine bar and restaurant near the corner of Crown and Oxford Street, they arguably provide the most interesting angles.

On one hand you have the wine list, which is several pages long and filled with an impressive array of German and Austrian wines that you don’t normally see in Sydney, as well as a variety of Bavarian beers.

On the other hand you have the food menu, which has dishes such as the Presssack mit Bratkartoffeln (a homemade galantine of meats in aspic) and veal meatballs served rare. There are also more (relatively) conventional meals such as a German-style anti pasto plate and beef cheeks in red wine sauce but, being in need of comfort food, I order the chocolate and walnut crepes instead.

The waitress is friendly and knows her wines, discussing several options that would match my crepes before offering a taste of three of them. I end up opting for a glass of the Fuchs Auslese Mosel Riesling from 2003, which is fantastic - fragrant, slightly sweet and with a complex flavour that makes it the best Riesling I’ve had in a long time.

The décor is attractive, with candle-lit tables and dim lighting, and one of the walls is made of books that are used as tiles. I begin to wonder why this place isn’t busier than it is, as only a few tables are full here even though it’s a Thursday night.

My crepes arrive, laced with a veil of melted chocolate, and are good - by the end I wish I had more.

I suspect that, like me, Sydneysiders may not be as willing to be as adventurous with food as they are with wine, and that maybe if Vinothek looked more like a wine bar than a restaurant - which is how it appears, especially from the street - it might be busier. Having said that, I’ll definitely be coming back, if only for another glass of the Fuchs Riesling.

It must be hard on Germans, trying to demonstrate the breadth of their culture to the world. All we expect is schnitzel and beer, both in huge volumes. If we start thinking wine, and elegance, and refinement, we're thinking France or Italy. The Teutons typically don't rate a mention.

Vinothek inverts this notion, while retaining one of the positive aspects of the stereotype: there is no problem with volume here. The intriguing wine list comprised of German and Austrian varietals includes massive 200ml glass options, and the $20 Brotzeitteller is a mountain of Germanic antipasti. Playing on the 'bibliothek' connotations in its name, Vinothek eschews the beer hall aesthetic popular amongst its established cousins, opting instead for a low-lit room looking out to Crown Street, and an impressive feature wall constructed entirely of books.

While perhaps not an obvious choice, Vinothek makes a unique statement for the redefinition of 'essen und trinken' in Sydney.

German & Austrian wines complimented by

German and European food.

Good place to start a night before heading to Mars Lounge.

Ist vino, ist good. German and Austrian wine, lots of interesting beer, and a big open space where the walls are covered floor to ceiling in books. The whole deal here is that you can eat anytime of the day - they don't have a set menu - so you might rock up at four in the arvo and order the sweet dumplings and a Maxlrainer Shloss Weiss bier or something from the massive wine list.

Vinothek Wine and Beer house has opened its doors at 241 Crown St Darlinghurst, offering German and international cuisine, and an exclusive, award winning German wine and beer selection, not seen before in Australia. Vinothek is only steps from busy Oxford Street but a world apart in pace and culture.

Vinothek is a new, modern German Wine and Beer house, combining traditional dishes from Germany and modern, international cuisine with an extensive wine and beer selection to compliment the menu.

“Our aim is to capture particular European traditions and tastes and bring it to Australia,” said a co-owner. “All our wines are sourced from generations old family owned wineries in the best German wine growing regions, and the standard of beer offered here, has not been seen in Australia.” All beers are gold medal winning hand-crafted Bavarian beers, brewed since 1636 from the private ,castle brewery of a German Prince.

Only recently opened, Vinothek’s feature book wall is fast becoming a popular talking point and provides the background for a spacious modern interior, accented with warm earth tones and dimmed lighting. Vinothek prides itself on supplying quality product at reasonable prices. Both food and drink are value for money, with dishes starting at $9 and house wines available from $6.50.
