The Würtemberg Region

Apart from the urban centers of Stuttgart and Heilbronn, Württemberg is a rural, hilly countryside with vineyards and orchards scattered amidst forests and fields.

It is a region known for quality wine in Germany, and is located in the historical region of Württemberg in southwestern Germany, which today forms part of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. Under German wine legislation, Württemberg and Baden are separate wine regions.

Most of the terraced vineyards of the past have been reorganized to improve efficiency. However, a number still exist, notably the so-called "cliff gardens" near the Neckar's scenic loops between Besigheim and Mundelsheim. Much of the red wine is light, fruity and easy to enjoy; but deep-coloured, rich, full-bodied red wine with great class is also produced here.

Riesling, as it is almost everywhere in Germany,  is also an important variety in Württemberg, accounting for nearly a quarter of the vineyard area, followed by Kerner and Müller-Thurgau. In general, the wines are hearty and full-bodied, with a vigorous acidity.

With 11,522 hectares (28,470 acres) under vine in 2006, Württemberg is Germany's fourth largest wine region. Winemaking cooperatives are very common in Württemberg, number around 70, and are responsible for almost 75% of the region's production.

Unlike most other German regions, Württemberg has a long history of producing red wines, although from somewhat different varieties than other German wine regions.

Most of the Württemberg wine region is situated around the river Neckar and several of its tributaries, Rems, Enz, Kocher und Jagst. The geography of the wine region is dominated by these river valleys and include several south-facing slopes.

The main part of Württemberg is situated between the cities of Stuttgart and Heilbronn. There are also vineyards on Lake Constance that belong to Württemberg. Seeventy-one percent of the vines grown in Württemberg are red wine varieties.

The most common variety , and the region's signature grape, is the Lemberger. This grape was said to produce of  Napoleon's favourite wines, which were produced from the vineyards in this area.
