The Pflaz (Palatinate)
Bordered by Rheinhesen on the north, and France on the south and west, the vineyards of the Pfalz (in English ‘palatinate’) sweep across this remarkably pretty, peaceful land for nearly 80 uninterrupted km..
It is Germany's second largest wine region in acreage, but often has the largest crop of all. For the visitor driving through the sea of vines along the German Wine Road, the scene is still pastoral with the tree-covered Haardt mountain range, castle ruins, fruit trees, and old walled villages of half-timbered houses.
In the Pfalz, the Riesling grape yields wines of substance and finesse, with a less austere acidity than their Mosel counterparts. Pleasant, mild white wines, rich in bouquet, and full of body are produced from Müller-Thurgau, Kerner, Silvaner and Scheurebe grapes, while smooth, fruity red wine is made from the Portugieser grape. In response to the growing demand for red wine, there are many new plantings of Dornfelder, which produces a deep-colored wine that can be quite complex.
The climate in the Pfalz is quite mild with a large number of sunny days, and an average, median temperature of 11 degrees. The soil type is principally loamy, which is often mixed with other soil types, such as chalk, clay, sandstone and sand.
Those wines, brought from the Pfalz by Vinothek, represent the very best of the non-mass-market wines produced in that area by very small wineries using traditional, vinicultural methods.
The Rieslings from this area generally have a distinct mineral undertone, and a fairly spicy character. In its better examples, its special characteristics are its fruity citrus aroma, a touch more sugar than Rieslings from most other German growing regions (except Baden) and a reserved acidity. This doesn’t mean, however, that all Rieslings from this area are necssarily sweet.
It is simply that, like most wines from the Pfalz, our Rieslings are quite full bodied, while the same time being less outspoken in their significant characteristics than Rieslings from other areas.
