Trollinger

This very old red variety probably originated in, and derives its name from, Tirol, where it is known as Schiava (Italy) and Vernatsch (Austria). It is very likely one of the oldest grape types in the world, and probably reached the southern regions of Germany during Roman times. The variety is first mentioned under that name in fourteenth century documents. For example Martin Luther drank it according to a report of the papal legate, Alexander, around 1520.

Today it is almost exclusively cultivated on steep, sunny locations in the Württemberg wine region of Baden-Württemberg. It has become a much maligned wine during the last century. Many of those with palates, which have been well rinsed with heavy tannins, have judged it to be not a proper red wine, anyway. But that is all about to change, thanks to an initiative by a number of the best vintners in Würrtemberg, among which we are proud to list the family Golter, which is one of our producers.

Our Red Varieties
Trollinger typically produces mostly lighter, dry, red wines, which are only moderately rich in tannin, and may exhibit a pronounced spicy, masculine character.A large yielder that ripens very late, it produces fragrant, fruity, light wines with a pronounced acidity; and that was part of the problem. Like many of the wines of Italy and Austria in the last century, this grape was used for a loveless over-production of mass wines. Then it was found throughout German wine country. Today it is planted almost exclusively in Württemberg, where it is the quaffing wine of choice, but where it is being restored to its former glory.

The wines will still be lighter, fruity, with somewhat less acid than other wines, but they are now being made so that they are fruit driven with a firmer body. The intent is to restore them to being wines, which can be cooled a little on a summer evening, and enjoyed by a senator of ancient Rome on his terrace.
