About Vinothek
If you are reading this 'About Us' section, we hope we may soon be able to welcome your joining the many Australian wine lovers, who now have the opportunity to drink what are unique, unusual, and outstanding wines. And, best of all, the prices at which you can buy these wonderful drops, which are absolutely exclusive to Vinothek, are much more attractive than what one would expect to pay in the average bottle shop. So, let us tell you a little about us.
Vinothek is a German word, which has similar translations in French and Italian - Vinothèque and Vinoteca. Various misconceptions of the meaning of the word abound, probably because too many people want to speculate on its derivation - not the least because, in the German, they have the word Bibliothek (library), and also several Pinakothek art galleries in Munich (often misspelled in English as 'Pinothek'). The 'old' Pinakothek is one of the oldest art galleries in the world, and houses one of the most famous collections of old master paintings. The 'new' Pinothek covers 19th century art, and the recently opened Pinakothek der Moderne exhibits modern art.
The essential meaning of Vinothek, however, is a place where good wine can be tasted and purchased. While thinking it deserves some of the overtones of Bibliothek and Pinakothek, our Vinothek retains the essential meaning. In Australia, Vinothek is the source of outstanding and exceptional, prize winning German wines (also with a contingent of the best Austrian wines) from mostly small, exclusive producers of both white and red wines.
At this time, Vinothek is restricted to the direct sale of these outstanding and exclusive wines, which it imports on its own behalf, until a new, on-premises outlet is again established.
Vinothek had previously established an outlet in Sydney to provide lovers of good wines, along with good food, a convivial meeting place, where they could drink the very finest, outstanding, indeed unusual and exclusive wines of Germany, as well as some from Austria. Although, in the last decades, Austrian wines were very much overlooked in the world in general, they are now becoming the focus of intense, international interest for their quality.
Vinothek's German wines blasted away generations old, false conceptions of German wines in the minds of the English speaking world generally. Unfortunately, despite excellent reviews, we were felt obliged to abandon that outlet due to the incompatibility of its separate ownership and management with our standards and concepts.
Vinothek's wines are all sourced by people who have had life long experience in both Germany and Australia, which ensures the wines' ready acceptance by the Australian palate. To produce and manage such a list requires knowledge such as can be built up only after many years. The goal is to try to provide great wines for every taste.
Our people know all our vintners personally, and, in most cases, have been acquainted with them for years. We have visited them, drunk wine with them, eaten with them, watched how they worked, and had many, many, in-depth discussions with them about wine.
And we love doing what we do! All of our people enjoy drinking great wine, and we enjoy talking about it - of course, over a glass or two of it - both among ourselves, as well as with our customers. We like to think we go out of our way to ensure that our customers enjoy dealing with us. We have a reputation for being knowledgeable about wine, but we do have also a realistic, and down to earth attitude towards wine, and the widely varying expectations of our customers. That means whether you are looking for fine wines for your cellar, or simply a case or two of good quaffing wine for everyday enjoyment, we will well understand you, and you can be assured that your every enquiry will be treated seriously.
